R.E. Walsh

I was born on December 25th, 1948, in upstate New York near the beautiful Adirondack Mountains, the youngest of six children in a lively household that nurtured my curiosity and love for the world around me. I never received formal art training, but my passion for drawing and painting grew from an early fascination with the masterful works I discovered at the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute in Utica, New York.

I spent countless hours studying and copying the portraits and landscapes of artists I admired — especially the evocative, honest beauty of Andrew Wyeth, the elegant brushwork of John Singer Sargent, and the luminous, expansive scenes painted by the artists of the Hudson Valley School.

Later in life, while serving in the Army and stationed in Berlin, Germany, I had the chance to stand before the original works of Rembrandt, Vermeer, Van Gogh, Pissarro, and many other masters I had only known from books. It was during my time in Europe that I read The Art Spirit by Robert Henri. His words — and the experience of seeing the great works of art history up close — deepened my conviction that I needed to create art of my own.

Today, I work primarily in soft pastel, pastel pencil, charcoal, graphite, acrylic, and oil. My subjects — whether people, animals, landscapes, or water scenes — are chosen for their gentle power to evoke memory, emotion, and a sense of place. I hope to share a moment with you of calm, beauty, and connection.
